TWI has extended its service portfolio in fatigue testing with a method designed to discover how the sea affects the fatigue life of pipes. Fatigue integrity management is one of the many services offered by TWI and an area that will take prime focus in the educational programme at the National Structural Integrity Research Centre – due to open late 2014.

This research, set out in a report titled ‘Monitoring fatigue crack growth in subsea threaded components using ultrasonic phased array techniques’, demonstrates an additional fatigue testing method. The pioneering work uses a 256 element two-dimensional array probe to enable early detection of cracking.
