Having completed a placement within the oil and gas industry during his bachelor’s degree, Warren was driven to increase his knowledge within the field of Structural Integrity. After attending the R4i (Research for Impact) event at TWI, he became aware of the opportunities available through NSIRC, and therefore applied for the place on the MSc course.

He explains “I was seeking a master’s degree that provided a broad range of modules linked to the mechanical engineering aspects of this industry. The Structural Integrity MSc offered by NSIRC was like no other available due to its close connection with industry. The modules were designed and taught by TWI industry professionals and the dissertation projects were to be defined by industry needs rather than academics. These features and the link with a highly regarded engineering institution such as Brunel University London, made the course extremely appealing to me.”

NSIRC strives to be a world-renowned centre of industrially driven academic excellence in the field of structural integrity. Each module is designed to be highly relevant to industry with stimulating assignments linking effectively to one another.

Having undertaken the course, titled “Determining the commonality between pressure vessels for fatigue reassessment”, Warren was suitably impressed with the delivery of the modules.

Modules such as Stress Analysis aim to improve on the existing knowledge gained from undergraduate degrees; whereas, Codes of Practice introduces the standards used by industry, which includes an assignment to carry out an engineering criticality assessment. Having gained the knowledge obtained by the MSc in Structural Integrity offered by NSRIC, it is NSIRC’s aim for students to feel well positioned to enter industry and share the knowledge obtained with other engineers.

Upon completion of the MSc in Structural Integrity, Warren will begin employment with TWI Ltd as a Project Leader. This was helped to have been made possible through the knowledge, skills and the network of connections obtained during his time on his master’s degree.
