Development of approaches in providing multi-criteria decision support for optimal life cycle management of assets in the shipping sector

Abstract:

This Part-time PhD is aimed at enabling a multi-criteria decision support approach to support identification of optimal solutions at the conceptual design stage using a through life perspective. Such approaches are particularly important in scenarios where novel concepts are being proposed or modifications to the original design (such as in retrofitting) made in assets such as ships. The multi-criteria decision making approach will enable optimal trade-offs to be carried out by considering Environmental Impacts, Life Cycle Cost Assessments and risk based criteria, as examples: between life cycle costs of composite material being introduced or a new type of propeller and the associated risks and environmental impact; and,  between capacity/function and its impact. A part of this work includes factoring in uncertainty in the inputs to the decision making process.
